Our Board

Jo Barron

Jo Barron - Co-founder and Director

Jo has had a life long passion for horses, starting as a pony mad girl growing up in England. Jo has a decade in corporate  community project management, including veterans and family support projects, STEM education programs and employee drives to support communities in need.

Jo is thrilled to be able to combine both her love of horses and to being able to help people. Her search to take up riding
again after more than just a few years out of the saddle, combined with a desire to learn more about ‘natural horsemanship’ led her to Scott Brodie’s yard in Helensburgh.

The rest they say is history and Horse Aid was borne out of a desire to help expand the program using her community experience and Scott’s horsemanship skills. Jo is also currently studying for her Diploma in Counselling to further aid those in need of help, and is a Community Volunteer with Legacy.

One Day Program Mono

Scott Brodie - Co-founder, Director and Program Lead

Scott is a Director of Horse Aid, and Director of the Thoroughbred and Veteran Welfare Alliance (TVWA). Following an extensive career with the NSW Mounted Police including a long period of time as a horse trainer, he followed his love of horses to become a classically trained rider and qualified instructor with the Equestrian Federation of Australia.

With many years of experience in the art of ‘Natural Horsemanship’ Scott took this one step further and embarked upon the retraining of Thoroughbred ex-racehorses. Using his skill and and practical methods he works with the most challenging horses retraining them after a career on the race track to that of a riding horse prepared for a second career; an opportunity for hundreds of ex-racehorses to lead purposeful lives.

Scott saw the similarities between the Thoroughbred ex-racehorse and uniquely skilled veterans as the basis to develop the healing horsemanship programs--initially through the TVWA and now through the registered charity Horse Aid.

Betty McKellar - Director

Betty began her love of horses at pony club in Newcastle and from a young age she owned and cared for her own horse which led to fulfilling her lifelong dream of joining the NSW Mounted Police.  During her 15 years of service, Betty worked directly with Scott Brodie and was fortunate to be mentored by Scott upon her retirement from the NSW Police Force. She is proud of two specific equine awards she received as a NSW Mounted Police—Sydney Royal Show—Best Turned Out Mounted Trooper and awarded by NSW Mounted Police—Patron's Award for horsemanship, dedication.

Currently Betty works in compliance and training for an NDIS accredited business specialising in mobility, disability and rehabilitation equipment.  And she is the proud owner of two Thoroughbred ex-racehorses who she schools and continues her education under the guidance of Scott Brodie as Jay Jay and Willy take full advantage of their second chance off-the-track.

Betty brings to the Horse Aid board the lived experience of being a first responder and training ex-racehorses providing core skills applicable to the Horse Aid mission. She is also currently studying her Certificate IV in Horse Management.
